Coined by Kayla Smith, #AutisticBlackPride offers to bust up the whitewashing of the Autistic community and demands that there be room for representation for other colours. To celebrate this very day (18th June), two black artists on the Autism Spectrum released a split: mynameisblueskye and Savan DePaul.
While both artists operate within the genre of afrofuturism, Savan DePaul is a producer, rapper and singer-songwriter whose music covers the ground from avant-garde hip hop to digital funk. Think Subtitle, Dâm-Funk or Thavius Beck. This applies not only to his solo work but also to his work with the black art collective Bad Apple Commune as well as the space-rap duo Sagan Theory. mynameisblueskye is a singer, songwriter and producer whose music runs the gamut between bedroom pop and experimental R&B, but with a scope as futuristic as it is folky. He also makes beats and composes music underneath a beat under the name blank videotapes. Together, they join forces not only to reintroduce themselves to the public looking for different music, but to celebrate #AutisticBlackPride through said reintroduction.
Tiergarten Records, a neurodiverse record label from Warwickshire, UK, presents this split release on physical format for the first time as part of this year’s International Cassette Store Day (12th October). The cassette is limited to 100 copies and will only be run once.
